What Drives You
Why do you do what you do? Why do you do your job? What fulfillment do you find in life? What is the thing that drives you?
I think we often get so caught up in titles and achievements and seeking external celebration that we forget about the reason we choose to do something in the first place. We forget about the joy, we lose the wonder, we lose the romanticization of an event. We get caught up in doing one thing and then moving onto the next. We forget to ask what drove us to do it in the first place.
I just finished a book for Book Club entitled The Desire Map; the whole concept of the book is to do things to elicit a specific feeling. To find a reason beyond achievement, beyond checking a box, beyond searching for accolades. It made me think deeply about the things I have done, the things I do, and the things I want to accomplish. But rather to think about the things we do to elicit celebrations, it's about creating a life, feeling a specific way. To find a specific desire we want out of life. To choose goals and dreams that align to that feeling, that desire, and to chase it without hesitation to find a more fulfilled and impactful life.
It’s an interesting concept and I think one that is beneficial for creating a life that you want to live rather than one that you want to escape from. To choose a feeling that you want to experience everyday is a bold decision that can shape your life to be the most meaningful to you. It can help you find love for a job, fulfillment in life, and drive to push the limit. It’s helped me shape and find direction for what I want this year to be. And I think this year has the potential to be pretty special.
My core desired feelings for the year are: Joy, Connection, and Authentic. I want to do things that I find joy in. I want to draw more, write more - both blog posts and short imaginative stories, I want to be creative and enjoy life. I want to be a positive force that people are drawn to because I help them feel more alive. Find Joy in all things.
I want to Connect to others and build meaningful relationships that make me feel whole and loved. I want to be able to be grounded and connected to myself. I want to be connected so that I can hold and share space for others and let them grow.
I want to be authentic in all areas of my life and not hide behind a mask or be hesitant to speak what is on my mind.
I believe that living and creating a life that embodies these three feelings, Joy, Connection, Authentic, is the driving factor to help me live my best life throughout the year and have a continued impact on those around me.
What is the feeling you are chasing this year? What’s the drive?
